3/4″ Plywood Cabinet Cases

Why are Woody Woodmakers’ cabinet cases made from 3/4 inch Plywood and seem to last forever?  A key ingredient is the choice of material.

We only use 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood for our cabinets case construction.  This has been our standard since 1985.  Some people might consider this as “ over kill”.  True, it is a fact that cabinets can be built with thinner plywood, or cheaper materials such as particle board, Decorative Laminate Veneer , medium density fiberboard (MDF), or wood veneer.  However we prefer to “over build”our cabinet cases with solid 3/4 inch plywood so that our products are more rigid, stronger and better quality.

“Ok, but why not use solid wood?  Isn’t solid wood stronger?”  Well, there are some advantages of cabinet grade 3/4 inch plywood over solid wood especially when building cabinet cases.  For example plywood tends to resist warping, shrinking, and expanding as opposed to solid wood.  There is also an argument for sustainability and cost.

This doesn’t mean we only use plywood.  In fact, the face frames, drawer fronts and doors are always made from solid wood.

We only use 3/4 inch plywood which some people might consider as “ over kill”.  We feel this adds to cabinet’s rigidity, strength, and quality.
